Mechanical Engineer (Consultancy)

Position Purpose

• This is a Consultancy-level role, not a routine site engineering position.
• The Mechanical Engineer will act as a technically competent representative of the Client, providing engineering consultancy, construction supervision and installation oversight for the installation, integration, testing and commissioning of mechanical and electrical equipment on a Gas fired Power Plant construction project.
• The Consultant is expected to independently evaluate engineering designs, contractor methodologies and installation quality against project specifications, manufacturer requirements, codes and standards, and HSE requirements — exercising the judgement to identify risk, challenge non-conforming work, and advise the Client with sound, defensible recommendations.

Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Technical Consultancy:

• Review drawings, specifications, datasheets, P&IDs, layouts and vendor/OEM documentation for compliance and constructability; identify design discrepancies and installation conflicts.
• Provide technical advice to the Client/Project Management Team; participate in technical meetings; review contractor method statements and technical submissions.
• Support RFIs, engineering change assessments and constructability input into planning and sequencing.

Construction & Installation Supervision:

• Oversee installation of rotating and static mechanical equipment — pumps, compressors, motors, generators, turbines, boilers, heat exchangers, HVAC, piping, valves, tanks/vessels, skids and mechanical supports — including positioning, levelling and alignment.
• Coordinate mechanical/electrical installation interfaces (generators, motors, transformers, switchgear, cable support, earthing/bonding) without assuming Electrical Engineer responsibilities.

Quality, Inspection & Alignment:

• Inspect installations against approved drawings/specifications; verify location, orientation, elevation, alignment and tolerances; witness critical inspection points.
• Review ITPs, NCRs and inspection records; identify and track close-out of non-conforming work; confirm readiness for pre-commissioning.
• Apply strong practical knowledge of rotating machinery alignment — shaft/coupling alignment, soft-foot checks, baseplate and anchor-bolt verification, shimming, bearing checks, vibration considerations and run-out checks; laser alignment experience an advantage.

Piping, Commissioning & Documentation:

• Review piping installation, supports and testing (hydrostatic/pneumatic), flushing and reinstatement; verify equipment-to-piping interfaces.
• Support mechanical completion, walkdowns, flushing, pressure testing, rotation and functional checks through to commissioning and handover.
• Maintain / review site reports, ITPs, method statements, NCRs, punch lists, certificates, as-built drawings and completion/handover dossiers to a clear, professional standard.

Contractor Management & HSE:

• Monitor contractor progress, competence and compliance with approved methodology; challenge inadequate proposals; support technical dispute resolution and punch-list close-out.
• Ensure activities comply with HSE requirements (JSAs, permits-to-work, lifting, working-at-height, hot work, confined space); stop and escalate unsafe work.

Key Performance Indicators

• Technical quality: accuracy of reviews, quality of recommendations, reduction in installation defects.
• Delivery & compliance: timely inspections/reviews, RFI/NCR turnaround, installation compliance with specifications.
• HSE: zero tolerance for deliberate violations; effective hazard identification and escalation.
• Contractor oversight and commissioning readiness: timely deviation identification, effective punch-list management, reduction in commissioning-related defects.

Qualifications & Experience

• B.Eng. / B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline; a Master's in Mechanical, Energy or Power Engineering is an advantage.
• Professional registration strongly preferred — COREN, MNSE, an equivalent international body, or relevant PM/HSE/quality certification.
• Substantial experience in mechanical / electromechanical construction and installation on power plant, industrial, oil & gas, petrochemical, EPC / EPCM or heavy engineering projects; gas/steam turbine and Balance-of-Plant experience highly preferred.
• Able to evidence direct involvement in comparable projects, including scope, responsibilities and duration.

Technical & Software Competence:

• Microsoft Project or Primavera P6, Excel, Word and document/engineering management platforms; AutoCAD, SolidWorks (or equivalent) knowledge an advantage.
• Working knowledge of ASME, API, ASTM, ISO, IEC, NFPA, ANSI, BS/EN and applicable Nigerian engineering regulations, applied as relevant to the specific project and equipment.

Key Deliverables:

• Installation inspection, technical observation and daily, weekly, monthly progress reports; equipment alignment and mechanical completion records; NCR review and close-out recommendations; drawing/method-statement review comments and RFI responses; commissioning-readiness, risk and lessons-learned reports; final consultancy report.
