Location: Abuja, Nigeria with travel to Maiduguri base once a quarter
Contract type: National contract - fixed term until 31/12/2026 with possible extension.
Objective of the role:
To lead and oversee the financial, administrative, and human resource functions of MAG’s country and field offices, ensuring compliance, operational efficiency, sound financial management, and effective people management in support of programme implementation and organizational goals.
All activities must be undertaken in accordance with the purpose, scope and principles of the MAG standards and policies.
Finance
Accounting
- Manage financial accounting activities, including monitoring advances, analysing balance sheet accounts, processing receipts and payments, and overseeing payroll-related accounting requirements.
- Prepare and process payments through cash, cheque, and bank transfer methods.
- Record accounting transactions in cash and bank journals and maintain up-to-date accounting system records.
- Ensure accurate accounting coding and allocation on all payment authorisations and supporting documentation.
- Reconcile and verify the consistency between cashbook balances and accounting records at month-end.
- Identify, track, and request missing documentation from relevant stakeholders, including cashiers, budget holders, logistics, and programme teams.
- Follow up on outstanding supporting documents and ensure their timely integration into the accounting records upon receipt.
- Prepare, consolidate, and submit monthly cash forecasts and funding requests to the Country Director.
- Act as the primary liaison with banking institutions on behalf of the programme, under the supervision of the Country Director.
- Support the Country Director in maintaining strong financial controls across MAG offices and activities, ensuring compliance with organisational, statutory, donor, host-country, and headquarters requirements.
Financial Controls, Compliance & Governance
- Ensure the completeness, accuracy, and admissibility of all accounting documentation, including payment authorisations, payment vouchers, invoices, and supporting documents.
- Ensure programme implementation and financial reporting comply with all applicable local and regional tax regulations, including income tax, social security contributions, VAT, and corporate tax requirements.
- Verify the correct allocation of expenditures in accordance with cost allocation structures and project budget frameworks, escalating any concerns to the Country Director.
- Perform half-year and year-end closing activities, including accruals, provisions, fixed asset verification and capitalisation, supporting documentation management, account reconciliations, deferred expense adjustments, and related accounting entries.
- Coordinate and support the preparation of the annual statutory accounts.
- Support with external audit processes in collaboration with MAG regional and HQ offices.
Grants, Partner & Donor Management
- Review partner financial reports and supporting documentation, ensuring compliance with partner agreements and the obligations of the prime contract.
- Contribute to budget preparation and ensure appropriate financial oversight and control during project proposal development, in line with donor and organizational requirements.
Administration and Human Resources
- Prepare, coordinate and monitor the payroll management of MAG Nigeria national staff
- Ensure taxes, social security contributions and advances are deducted and paid on time to administrative and fiscal authorities
- Coordinate the collection and archiving of monthly timesheets
- Update leave tracker and coordinate leave plans request
- Manage and pay SDDs to expatriate staff
- Compiles and carries out the methodical filing (electronic and paper) of all HR files of MAG's national staff
- Review MAG Nigeria national staff handbook and provide recommendations to Country Director and MAG regional HR focal point to ensure compliance with Nigeria labour law
- Ensure continuous local monitoring of legal standards and regulatory developments related to labour legislation
- Ensure labour legislation changes are reflected in MAG HR procedures and documents and communicated clearly to MAG national staff
- Coordinate annual Performance and Development Review (PDR) for national staff
- Plan and coordinate the recruitment of new staff
- Prepare contracts, extensions or amendments to employment contracts
- Plan and coordinate on boarding of new recruited staff
- Communicate to the Nigeria team relevant HR information (public holidays, modification of the Labor Law, etc.)

Person Specification
Essential Experience
- Graduate degree in Accountancy and ICAN certification is an added value.
- Prior experience of at least five (5) years in a similar Finance role for an NGO.
- Proven experience in human resources management in Nigeria.
- Very good organizational skills, attention to details, and ability to work independently.
- Excellent computer skills, including in the use of MS Word and Excel.
- Fluency in English
