Job Summary
- We are seeking a diligent and proactive Safety Officer to support the implementation and monitoring of Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) standards across our operations.
- The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying workplace hazards, conducting safety inspections, promoting safe work practices, investigating incidents, and ensuring employees and contractors comply with established safety procedures and applicable regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement and monitor the company's Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) policies and procedures.
- Conduct regular workplace safety inspections and identify potential hazards and unsafe practices.
- Carry out risk assessments and recommend appropriate control measures.
- Monitor compliance with safe working procedures, permit-to-work systems, and other applicable safety requirements.
- Conduct toolbox talks, safety briefings, inductions, and awareness training for employees and contractors.
- Ensure the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other safety equipment.
- Monitor operational activities to identify unsafe conditions and take appropriate corrective action.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses, and unsafe occurrences and prepare detailed reports.
- Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training, corrective actions, and other HSE activities.
- Support emergency preparedness activities, including fire drills, evacuation exercises, and emergency response procedures.
- Ensure fire extinguishers, first-aid kits, emergency equipment, and safety signage are available and properly maintained.
- Monitor housekeeping and ensure work areas are clean, orderly, and free from avoidable hazards.
- Work closely with supervisors and operational teams to resolve safety concerns.
- Assist in the development and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Promote a strong safety culture and encourage employees to report hazards and near misses.
- Monitor contractors and visitors to ensure compliance with site safety requirements.
- Keep abreast of applicable HSE legislation, standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Carry out any other safety-related duties assigned by management.
Requirements & Qualifications
- OND, HND, or Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Sciences, or a related discipline.
- 2–4 years of relevant HSE/Safety experience, preferably in an industrial, manufacturing, logistics, warehouse, construction, or similar operational environment.
- Relevant professional HSE/Safety certifications are required or highly desirable.
- Knowledge of Nigerian workplace health and safety requirements and industry best practices.
- Practical experience in risk assessment, incident investigation, safety inspections, and emergency response.
- Good knowledge of PPE, fire safety, first aid, and workplace hazard control.
- Strong observation and reporting skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to conduct safety training and toolbox talks effectively.
- Ability to work independently and maintain high standards of professionalism.
- Good computer and report-writing skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced operational environment.
