Account Officer, STRIDE Program
the African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID)
About the Program
- STRIDE (Scientific Training and Research in Infectious Disease Genomics and Entrepreneurship) is a six-year, pan-African workforce development program designed to strengthen Africa’s health systems by building a new generation of genomics and bioinformatics professionals.
- Led by the Institute of Genomics and Global Health (IGH) at Redeemer’s University in partnership with the University of Cape Town, University of Yaoundé I, and Villgro Africa, STRIDE aims to train and equip approximately 5,100 young African scientists and health professionals to transition into dignified, sustainable careers across disease surveillance, research, diagnostics, and biotech innovation.
- The program addresses Africa’s critical shortage of genomics expertise through three integrated pathways: internationally accredited MSc and PhD training with guaranteed professional placements, intensive skills and upskilling programs for early- and mid-career professionals, and bioentrepreneurship education supporting the development of locally driven health innovations.
- By strengthening faculty capacity at emerging universities and building employment pipelines with national public health institutions, STRIDE contributes to an Africa-led genomics ecosystem that advances health sovereignty, innovation, and improved health outcomes across the continent.
Description
- STRIDE is seeking an experienced Accounting Officer to manage day-to-day financial operations, ensuring accurate tracking, reporting, and compliance of program expenditures across this multi-country initiative.
- The Accounting Officer will work closely with IGH’s Head Accountant, STRIDE program staff, and partners to maintain financial records, process expenses, and prepare reports that meet organisational and donor requirements.
- This role is central to maintaining transparency, accountability, and effective resource management, enabling STRIDE to deliver on its objectives in workforce development, institutional capacity strengthening, and the growth of an Africa-led genomics and surveillance ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records for the STRIDE program, including expense tracking, ledger entries, and reconciliations.
- Process and record approved program expenditures in compliance with organisational policies, donor regulations, and accounting standards.
- Prepare regular financial reports, summaries, and analyses for internal management, the Head Accountant, and donor reporting requirements.
- Monitor budgets, flag discrepancies, and provide timely updates on actual versus planned expenditures.
- Assist in preparing financial documentation and supporting materials for audits and donor reviews.
- Coordinate with program staff to ensure proper documentation, approvals, and classification of expenses.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 3–5 years of professional experience in accounting, preferably in NGOs, research programs, or donor-funded projects.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and budget monitoring.
- Experience with ERP/Accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
- Familiarity with donor financial rules and regulations, particularly those of international foundations, development agencies, and research funders, is an advantage.
Preferred Skills:
- Attention to detail and strong organisational skills to manage multiple tasks and deadlines independently.
- Ability to analyse financial data and produce clear, accurate reports.
- Strong communication skills for liaising with program staff, finance team members, and external stakeholders.
- Integrity, discretion, and adherence to ethical financial practices.
- Proactive problem-solving skills and ability to suggest process improvements.
- Familiarity with multi-country or multi-partner program finance is an advantage.
