HVAC Mechanical Lead (Engineering)

Job Summary : Our client is seeking an experienced HVAC Mechanical Lead to join our engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, planning, equipment selection, installation supervision, testing, pre-commissioning, commissioning and technical delivery of HVAC and mechanical systems across various projects.

The ideal candidate should have strong experience in VRF, chilled water, DX and ventilation systems, as well as demonstrated ability to perform cooling-load calculations, prepare technical documentation, coordinate multidisciplinary teams and supervise mechanical/HVAC installations.

Key Responsibilities :

Design and develop HVAC systems, including VRF, chilled water, DX and ventilation systems.

Perform cooling-load and heat-load calculations and determine appropriate system capacities.

Design and size HVAC ductwork, chilled-water piping and associated mechanical systems.

Select appropriate HVAC equipment including chillers, AHUs, FCUs, VRF units, DX split units, pumps and associated accessories.

Prepare HVAC layouts, schematics, equipment schedules, specifications and other engineering drawings.

Review and interpret architectural, structural, electrical and other MEP drawings to ensure proper coordination.

Supervise HVAC and mechanical installation works on project sites.

Supervise the fabrication and installation of ductwork, chilled-water piping, insulation, supports and related mechanical systems.

Coordinate contractors, subcontractors, vendors and site teams to ensure quality and timely project execution.

Prepare MTOs, BOQs, material specifications, method statements, work packs and material approval documents.

Prepare and review pre-commissioning and commissioning procedures and documentation.

Conduct and supervise testing, commissioning, air balancing and chilled-water balancing.

Inspect completed installations to ensure compliance with approved designs, specifications, quality requirements and applicable standards.

Identify and resolve technical issues arising during design, installation and commissioning.

Provide technical support throughout the engineering, procurement, construction, installation, pre-commissioning, commissioning and handover phases of projects.

Liaise with clients, consultants, contractors, vendors and other engineering disciplines on technical matters.

Conduct site surveys and inspections and provide technical recommendations where required.

Support the preparation of project reports, progress updates, technical submissions and handover documentation.

Ensure all HVAC and mechanical works comply with applicable HSE, quality and engineering standards.

Provide technical guidance to junior engineers, technicians and installation teams.

Support the maintenance, troubleshooting and optimization of HVAC systems where required.

Requirements

Required Experience & Qualifications

Bachelor's degree/HND in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.

8–12 years of relevant experience in mechanical/HVAC engineering, preferably in commercial, industrial, oil & gas, infrastructure, or large-scale building projects.

COREN registration is highly preferred.

Membership of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and/or Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE) is an advantage.

Strong practical experience in HVAC and VRF system design and installation.

Proven experience with chilled water, VRF/VRV, DX and ventilation systems.

Demonstrated experience in cooling-load calculations and HVAC equipment selection.

Experience supervising HVAC installation, testing, balancing, pre-commissioning and commissioning.

Strong understanding of mechanical building services and MEP coordination.

Experience preparing MTOs, BOQs, specifications, method statements and technical documentation.

Ability to read and interpret engineering and MEP drawings.

Strong experience in contractor, vendor and site-team supervision.

Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.

Experience with HVAC design software such as Carrier HAP, AutoFLUID, HEVACOMP, Revit MEP, or manufacturer-specific VRF software is an advantage. 

Good knowledge of applicable HVAC and mechanical engineering standards.

Strong analytical, problem-solving and project management skills.

Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills.

Willingness to work on project sites and travel when required.
