- The position of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos will be vacant on 1st December, 2026.
- In accordance with the University of Jos Act, CAP U8, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria as amended by the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Act, 2003, and the Conditions and Scheme of Service for Senior Staff, the Governing Council of the University has approved that the position of Vice-Chancellor be advertised.
- Applications are therefore, invited from suitably qualified candidates with requisite qualifications and cognate experience to apply for the post of Vice-Chancellor, University of Jos.
- The Vice-Chancellor shall have the general functions of coordinating the activities of the University and is the Chief Executive, Chief Academic and Chief Accounting Officer of the University.
- The Vice-Chancellor must be a person with a clear vision for the further development of the University as well as readiness to implement the Vision, Mission and Strategic development of the University.
- He/She must be a person of high integrity and academic excellence, with an indelible reputation in his/her respective discipline, devoid of any form of litigation and scandal.
- He/She is expected to be morally sound, of impeccable character and must be a person who is physically and mentally fit, in state of good health.
- The Vice-Chancellor must be an individual with Good Interpersonal and Team Building skills with the ability to build bridges among staff, students, alumni, members of the University and the host communities as well as stakeholders.
The Vice-Chancellor is also:- A Member of the Governing Council
- Chairman of the Senate
- Chairman of the Congregation
- He/she is to promote high standard in research, teaching and learning, requisite students' admission, welfare and discipline.
Responsibilities
- The Vice Chancellor is responsible to the Governing Council for the day to day management of the Human, Financial and Material Resources of the University. All the other offices of the administration are responsible to him/her.
- The Vice-Chancellor must also:
- Ensure that the provisions of the Laws, Statutes, Ordinances and Regulations of the University are upheld.
- Provide strategic leadership and vision for the University.
- Have a good understanding of the Vision and Mission of the University of Jos with significant and deep experience in all facets of University administration in general.
- Maintain the efficiency and good order of the University.
- Exercise such power as may be expedient within the Law.
Tenute and Conditions:
- The appointment is for a non-renewable term of five (5) years only.
- The remuneration and other benefits shall be as approved by the Federal Government in Nigerian Federal Universities and as may be determined by the Governing Council of the University of Jos from time to time.
Requirements
Candidates for the position must meet the following criteria:
- Must possess a good University Education from a recognised University.
- Must have spent not less than fifteen (15) years of unbroken teaching and research working experience in a recognised University system, with at least, ten (10) years' work experience as a highly distinguished scholar of the rank of Professor (as at the date of this advertisement) with the ability to provide Academic, Research, Administrative and Managerial leadership.
- Must have a subsisting Teaching and Research position in a recognised University of equal standing as the University of Jos.
- Must demonstrate evidence of being a recipient of funded research grants and research collaborations with local and international agencies to uplift the academic status of the University.
- Demonstrate strong leadership skills with the ability to drive academic and administrative excellence.
- Possess requisite and relevant managerial experience to be able to provide leadership to the University.
- Must be widely respected within the academic community, both nationally and internationally.
- Have a clear vision for the continuous development of the University, even in the face of resource constraints.
- Be committed to upholding and advancing the University's mission, vision and core values.
- Must possess personal integrity in the Management of Funds and the capacity to deploy financial resources as appropriate.
- Must be able to attract extra-statutory funds and mobilize other resources for the development of the University.
- Must be able to attract extra-statutory funds and mobilize other resources for the development of the University.
- Must be able to attract, motivate and retain highly skilled and talented staff (teaching and non-teaching).
- Must have excellent written and spoken communication skills.
- Must be a person who will not foster any personal, racial, ethnic, political, religious or other sectional interests.
- Must be proficient in Information, Communication and Technology skills, and be committed to the development of digital skills.
- Must be a member of a relevant Professional body.
- Must not be above the age of sixty-four (64) years on the 1st December, 2026.
