Job Summary

  • A hospital porter moves patients, equipment and numerous other medical paraphernalia between the various areas of a hospital. Hospital porters are essential in maintaining the smooth running of a hospital. A significant aspect of the job is patient care.

Responsibilities
As a Porter , your core responsibilities will comprise of the following:

  • Transferring patients to and from various locations, such as from the ward to the diagnostics department.
  • Moving of vital, often extremely costly, equipment between the different departments of the hospital.
  • Take samples to laboratories when required or asked to.
  • Move hospital furniture and electrical equipment when required.
  • Transport clinical waste and dangerous materials when instructed.
  • Take patients from their ward to consultations and back again.
  • Take supplies to wards.
  • Refill and distribute drinking cans to every available dispenser throughout the hospital.
  • Delivering patients’ notes to the correct place at the correct time when instructed to.
  • Taking dead bodies from operating theatres and wards to the mortuary.
  • Moving specialist apparatus around the hospital e.g. wheelchair, oxygen tank etc.
  • In some occasions, you will be required to provide emotional support to patients especially to those who need comfort and reassure those who are feeling weak or distressed.
  • Sometimes you will also be required to placate irritable or obstinate patients and or restrain patients or patient relatives who act out.

Requirements
Furthermore, you are required to possess the following:

  • Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology
  • Ability to work quickly but calmly in emergencies
  • Good interpersonal skills - the ability to listen and empathize
  • Patience and tolerance
  • Caring and sympathetic nature
  • Physical fitness
  • A flexible approach to work
  • Knowledge of relevant patient care
  • Friendly and professional bedside manner
  • Multi-tasking skills
  • Effective oral, written, and reading communication skills
  • Understands legal implications of patient care.
