Communications Officer

About the Role

Value Female Network (VFN) is seeking a creative, highly organized and results-oriented Communications Officer to lead the organization's communication, visibility, media engagement, digital content and programme documentation. You will strengthen VFN's public profile across traditional media, digital platforms and stakeholder networks, and translate technical programme information, field data and community experiences into compelling content for diverse audiences — always in a way that is accurate, ethical, survivor-centered and consistent with VFN's brand.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement VFN's communication and visibility strategy, including annual, quarterly and monthly plans, an organizational communication calendar, and donor visibility plans for funded projects.
• Write, edit and proofread high-quality content — press releases, articles, newsletters, social media posts, website copy, programme briefs, fact sheets, speeches, annual reports and donor visibility materials.
• Develop human-interest and success stories that show programme impact while protecting the dignity, privacy and safety of the people involved.
• Manage VFN's social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, TikTok, YouTube), maintain a content calendar, publish engaging content, respond to enquiries, and track performance through analytics.
• Design social media cards, flyers, brochures and reports using Canva, Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator or similar; capture and edit photographs, videos and reels from programme activities and events.
• Keep the website current and well-organized, and maintain a secure digital archive of communication products and multimedia.
• Build and manage media relations — cultivate journalists and editors, distribute press releases and statements, coordinate interviews and media engagements, and monitor coverage.
• Document field activities and programme results, and produce communication materials and reports for launches, trainings, campaigns and community events.
• Lead campaign and advocacy communication on FGM, GBV, SRHR, child protection, positive parenting and girls' education, including commemorative-day activities, themes, key messages and hashtags.
• Protect and promote VFN's brand — ensuring correct, consistent use of the name, logo, colors, templates and messaging, and correct use of donor and partner logos.
• Uphold safeguarding, consent and confidentiality in all communication involving children, survivors and vulnerable persons, using survivor-centered, non-stigmatizing language and obtaining informed consent before publishing identifiable content.
• Track communication performance, prepare monthly, quarterly and annual reports, and support donor and programme reporting with approved stories, photos and analytics.

Qualifications and Experience

• A Bachelor's degree or HND in Mass Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Media Studies, Marketing, Development Communication, Social Sciences or a related field; a postgraduate qualification or professional certification is an advantage.
• A minimum of three (3) years' relevant experience in communication, media, public relations, digital communication or organizational visibility.
• Demonstrated experience managing organizational social media platforms and developing communication strategies, content calendars and digital campaigns.
• Strong experience writing and editing for different audiences, and documenting community-based or development programmes.
• Experience with graphic design, photography and video editing tools.
• Experience communicating on sensitive issues (GBV, FGM, child protection, SRHR) and working with NGOs or development partners is strongly preferred.

Key Skills

• Excellent writing, editing and proofreading, with strong verbal and presentation skills.
• Social media management and analytics; content planning and campaign development.
• Graphic design (Canva, Photoshop, Illustrator) and video editing (CapCut, Premiere Pro or similar).
• Website content management; proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
• Strong attention to detail, creativity, time management, and the ability to meet tight deadlines across multiple assignments.
• Sound judgment with confidential information, and a commitment to gender equality, child protection and safeguarding.

Desirable

• Knowledge of Nigeria's development, gender and civil-society landscape.
• Ability to communicate in Yoruba or another relevant Nigerian language.
• Experience with UN agencies, donors or international development partners, and with donor branding and visibility requirements.
