Senior Registrar - Cardiology

Job Objective

• The Senior Registrar, Cardiology will provide high-quality, evidence-based care to patients with cardiovascular conditions while undertaking advanced specialist training under the supervision of Consultant Cardiologists.
• The role involves assessing and managing patients across inpatient, outpatient, emergency and critical-care settings; performing approved non-invasive and invasive procedures within demonstrated competence; supporting teaching, audit and research; and contributing to safe, efficient multidisciplinary cardiovascular services.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Clinical Care and Patient Management:

• Assess patients with suspected or established cardiovascular disease through focused history, examination and interpretation of relevant investigations.
• Formulate and implement evidence-based management plans under consultant supervision for coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, hypertension, valvular disease and other cardiovascular conditions.
• Review cardiology inpatients and outpatients, participate in consultant-led ward rounds and ensure timely escalation of complex or deteriorating patients.
• Request and interpret ECGs, ambulatory monitoring, echocardiography, stress testing, cardiac biomarkers and other investigations within approved competence.
• Perform or assist with approved non-invasive and invasive cardiac procedures under appropriate supervision, maintaining procedural logs and required competency evidence.
• Provide clear information to patients and families, support shared decision-making, and complete accurate clinical documentation, prescriptions, referrals and discharge summaries.

Emergency and On-Call Responsibilities:

• Participate in the cardiology on-call rota and respond promptly to acute coronary syndromes, arrhythmias, acute heart failure, cardiac arrest and other cardiovascular emergencies.
• Initiate resuscitation and stabilisation in accordance with current ACLS and AMCE protocols, seeking consultant support at the appropriate escalation threshold.
• Coordinate timely assessment and referral of STEMI and other time-critical cases and ensure effective clinical handover and follow-up.

Clinical Governance, Quality and Safety:

• Comply with AMCE policies, national guidance and recognised international standards for cardiovascular care, patient safety, infection prevention, medication safety and radiation protection.
• Participate in clinical audit, morbidity and mortality reviews, incident reporting, root-cause analysis and quality-improvement projects.
• Contribute to the development and review of clinical pathways, protocols and standard operating procedures.

Education, Training and Supervision:

• Maintain active participation in an accredited senior residency/specialist training programme and meet all training, rotation, logbook, assessment and examination requirements.
• Attend and contribute to journal clubs, case presentations, grand rounds, simulation sessions and other continuing professional development activities.
• Support the day-to-day teaching and supervision of junior residents, medical officers, interns, nurses and students within delegated authority and escalate performance or patient-safety concerns.

Research and Academic Contribution:

• Participate in approved clinical research, data collection, service evaluation and presentation or publication of findings.
• Apply current evidence and emerging developments in cardiology to clinical practice and departmental learning.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration and Service Delivery:

• Work effectively with cardiac surgeons, intensivists, emergency physicians, radiologists, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory teams and allied health professionals.
• Participate in heart-team and other multidisciplinary meetings and maintain timely communication with referring clinicians.
• Support efficient use of beds, diagnostics, equipment and supplies and contribute to service improvement initiatives.

Professional and Ethical Practice:

• Maintain valid professional registration, annual practising licence and required certifications throughout employment.
• Practise within competence and delegated authority, obtain informed consent, protect confidentiality and uphold professional and ethical standards.
• Demonstrate respectful, culturally sensitive, patient-centred conduct and remain accountable for assigned duties and continuous professional development.

Qualifications

• Medical Degree (MBBS, MBChB or equivalent) from a recognised institution.
• Full registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and a valid annual practising licence.
• Successful completion of the relevant Part I Fellowship/Specialty Examination of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN), the West African College of Physicians (WACP), or a recognised equivalent examination that qualifies the doctor for appointment as a Senior Registrar in Nigeria.
• Specialty certification in Cardiology.
• Relevant clinical experience in cardiology, including supervised exposure to inpatient, outpatient, emergency and critical cardiovascular care.
• Competence in cardiovascular assessment and in interpreting ECGs, cardiac biomarkers, ambulatory monitoring, echocardiography and other common investigations, appropriate to training level.
• Ability to perform or assist with approved cardiology procedures under supervision and to maintain an accurate procedural logbook.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification, or ability to obtain these within the stipulated period.
• Commitment to clinical governance, research, audit, quality improvement, ethical practice and continuous professional development.
• Proficiency in electronic health records and awareness of infection prevention, medication safety and radiation-safety requirements.
