About the Role
- We are seeking qualified, compassionate and experienced Medical Doctors to provide quality clinical care and contribute to the effective implementation of health programme activities for vulnerable and crisis-affected populations.
- The Medical Doctor will be responsible for providing comprehensive medical assessment, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care to patients in accordance with established clinical guidelines, national protocols and applicable humanitarian health standards.
- The successful candidates will work closely with nurses, midwives, pharmacists, laboratory personnel, community health workers and other programme staff to ensure that patients receive timely, safe, respectful and appropriate care.
- The role will also contribute to disease prevention, health promotion, clinical documentation, referrals, emergency response and the continuous improvement of quality of care.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical Assessment and Patient Care:
- Conduct comprehensive medical consultations, clinical assessments and physical examinations.
- Diagnose and manage common medical conditions in accordance with approved clinical guidelines and treatment protocols.
- Provide appropriate treatment, prescriptions and follow-up care.
- Identify patients requiring urgent or specialized care and facilitate timely referral.
- Manage medical emergencies within the scope of professional competence and available resources.
- Monitor patients' clinical progress and modify treatment plans where necessary.
- Ensure appropriate continuity of care for patients requiring follow-up.
- Provide compassionate, respectful and non-discriminatory care to all patients.
- Maintain appropriate clinical standards and patient safety at all times.
Maternal, Child and General Health Services:
- Provide clinical support for maternal, newborn and child health services as applicable to the programme.
- Support the assessment and management of common childhood illnesses.
- Provide appropriate clinical management of communicable and non-communicable diseases.
- Identify high-risk pregnancies and other conditions requiring specialized care and referral.
- Support health education and counselling for patients, caregivers and communities.
- Promote preventive healthcare practices, including immunization, hygiene, nutrition and disease prevention.
Clinical Documentation and Patient Records:
- Ensure accurate, complete and timely documentation of patient consultations and treatment.
- Maintain confidentiality and security of patient records and medical information.
- Ensure appropriate completion of medical registers, referral forms, prescriptions and other clinical documentation.
- Review patient records to support continuity and quality of care.
- Contribute to accurate health programme reporting and data collection.
- Ensure that clinical information is documented in accordance with organizational and applicable health standards.
Referral and Continuity of Care:
- Identify cases requiring referral to secondary or tertiary healthcare facilities.
- Coordinate referrals and follow-up of referred patients where required.
- Ensure appropriate documentation accompanies referred patients.
- Maintain effective communication with referral facilities and programme health staff.
- Monitor referred cases and support continuity of care after referral where feasible.
Health Promotion and Community Engagement:
- Participate in health education and awareness activities for patients, caregivers and affected communities.
- Provide accurate information on disease prevention, treatment adherence and healthy practices.
- Support community-based health promotion activities in collaboration with programme and community teams.
- Promote early care-seeking behaviour and appropriate use of available health services.
- Contribute to community feedback mechanisms and respond appropriately to health-related concerns.
Quality of Care and Clinical Standards:
- Adhere to national clinical guidelines, approved treatment protocols and relevant professional standards.
- Promote rational prescribing and appropriate use of medicines and medical supplies.
- Monitor clinical practices and identify areas requiring improvement.
- Support infection prevention and control measures within health facilities and service delivery points.
- Participate in clinical meetings, case reviews and quality improvement activities.
- Report significant clinical incidents, adverse events and patient safety concerns through established mechanisms.
- Contribute to maintaining a safe, clean and patient-friendly clinical environment.
Team Collaboration and Technical Support:
- Work collaboratively with nurses, midwives, pharmacists, laboratory personnel, community health workers and other health staff.
- Provide appropriate clinical guidance and technical support to members of the health team.
- Participate in multidisciplinary case management and clinical review meetings.
- Support mentoring and on-the-job capacity building of relevant health personnel.
- Maintain effective communication with programme, MEAL, logistics and administrative teams as required.
- Contribute to a positive, respectful and professional working environment.
Medicines, Supplies and Infection Prevention:
- Promote appropriate and rational use of medicines in accordance with treatment protocols.
- Work with pharmacy and health teams to identify potential shortages or issues affecting patient care.
- Support appropriate management and use of medical equipment and supplies.
- Adhere to infection prevention and control standards.
- Ensure appropriate precautions are taken when managing infectious diseases and other clinical risks.
- Report equipment, medicine or supply concerns that may affect quality of care.
Reporting and Programme Support:
- Contribute to timely and accurate health programme reports.
- Provide relevant clinical information and programme updates to the appropriate supervisor.
- Participate in health programme planning, review and evaluation activities.
- Support the collection and analysis of relevant clinical and programme data.
- Contribute to identifying gaps in service delivery and recommending practical improvements.
- Participate in outreach, mobile clinics or other programme activities where required.
Professional Conduct and Continuous Learning:
- Maintain a high level of professional integrity, confidentiality and ethical conduct.
- Maintain valid professional registration and comply with applicable medical professional requirements.
- Keep abreast of relevant clinical guidelines, treatment protocols and emerging health concerns.
- Participate in relevant training, clinical learning and professional development activities.
- Seek appropriate technical advice or specialist support when required.
- Recognize personal professional limitations and refer cases appropriately.

Qualifications and Experience
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
- Valid registration and current practising licence with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience after qualification and registration.
- Demonstrated experience providing clinical assessment, diagnosis and treatment.
- Experience working in a hospital, health facility, humanitarian programme or similar healthcare setting.
- Good knowledge of standard clinical guidelines, treatment protocols and infection prevention and control practices.
- Ability to manage routine clinical cases and recognize conditions requiring urgent referral.
- Good clinical documentation and report-writing skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to patient confidentiality, safety and ethical medical practice.
Desirable Experience:
- Experience working with NGOs, INGOs, UN agencies or humanitarian/development organizations.
- Experience working in conflict-affected, hard-to-reach or resource-constrained environments.
- Experience providing healthcare services to displaced populations and other vulnerable groups.
- Experience in maternal, newborn and child health services.
- Experience in emergency response or community-based healthcare delivery.
- Experience with outreach services, mobile clinics or integrated health programmes.
- Familiarity with humanitarian principles and relevant health programme standards.
