Project Engineer

Job Summrary

• The Project Engineer is responsible for the technical coordination, planning, supervision, and execution of construction activities on assigned projects.
• The role ensures that project works are delivered in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, quality standards, safety requirements, budget, and agreed timelines.

Key Responsibilities
Project Planning & Execution:

• Assist the Project Manager in planning, coordinating, and executing construction activities.
• Review project drawings, specifications, BOQs, contracts, method statements, and work programmes.
• Develop and monitor work plans and schedules for assigned construction activities.
• Coordinate daily site activities to ensure smooth and timely project execution.
• Monitor project progress against approved schedules and identify potential delays.
• Recommend practical solutions to technical and operational challenges.
• Ensure construction activities are executed in accordance with approved designs and project requirements.

Technical Coordination:

• Review and interpret architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, and electrical drawings as applicable to the project.
• Coordinate technical activities among consultants, subcontractors, suppliers, and site teams.
• Raise Requests for Information (RFIs) where clarification is required.
• Review shop drawings, technical submissions, method statements, and material samples.
• Ensure proper coordination between different engineering disciplines.
• Resolve technical issues within assigned authority and escalate complex matters to the Project Manager.

Site Supervision:

• Supervise construction activities and ensure compliance with approved drawings and specifications.
• Monitor the work of subcontractors, artisans, technicians, and site operatives.
• Ensure proper sequencing of construction activities.
• Monitor manpower, equipment, and material deployment on site.
• Verify completed works before requesting inspections and approvals.
• Identify defective or substandard work and ensure corrective action is taken.
• Ensure proper housekeeping and efficient utilisation of site resources.

Quality Assurance & Control:

• Ensure construction activities comply with approved quality standards and specifications.
• Coordinate with the QA/QC team on inspections and testing.
• Review Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), checklists, and quality procedures.
• Identify and report non-conforming works and ensure timely rectification.
• Monitor workmanship and ensure rework is minimised.
• Ensure approved materials and construction methods are used throughout the project.
• Support the preparation and maintenance of quality records.

Health, Safety & Environmental Management:

• Ensure all construction activities comply with company and project HSE requirements.
• Promote safe working practices among employees, contractors, and subcontractors.
• Participate in toolbox meetings, safety inspections, risk assessments, and site safety meetings.
• Ensure appropriate permits and safe systems of work are implemented.
• Report hazards, incidents, near misses, and unsafe practices promptly.
• Stop or escalate unsafe activities where necessary.

Cost & Resource Management:

• Monitor the efficient use of construction materials, labour, tools, equipment, and other resources.
• Minimise material wastage and unnecessary project costs.
• Support the Project Manager and Quantity Surveyor in monitoring project costs.
• Verify quantities and completed works where required.
• Monitor subcontractor activities against agreed scope and work programmes.
• Identify potential variations and additional works and report them promptly.

Materials & Procurement Coordination;

• Prepare material requirements for assigned construction activities.
• Coordinate with Procurement and Stores to ensure timely availability of materials.
• Verify delivered materials against approved specifications and quantities.
• Ensure proper storage and handling of construction materials.
• Report shortages, damaged materials, or specification discrepancies.

Project Documentation & Reporting:

• Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports on project activities and progress.
• Maintain accurate records of site activities, inspections, approvals, and technical issues.
• Track project progress and provide regular updates to the Project Manager.
• Maintain records of RFIs, drawings, method statements, inspection requests, and approvals.
• Assist in maintaining the project drawing register and document control system.
• Support preparation of as-built drawings and project close-out documentation.

Contractor & Stakeholder Management:

• Coordinate with subcontractors and suppliers to ensure timely execution of works.
• Monitor subcontractor performance and compliance with project requirements.
• Attend project coordination and technical meetings.
• Liaise with clients, consultants, and other stakeholders on technical matters as assigned.
• Ensure stakeholder concerns affecting project delivery are promptly escalated and addressed.

Testing, Commissioning & Handover:

• Coordinate inspection and testing of completed works.
• Monitor commissioning activities where applicable.
• Prepare and track snagging and punch-list items.
• Ensure defects and outstanding works are closed within agreed timelines.
• Support preparation of project handover documentation.
• Participate in final inspection and project close-out activities.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

• Percentage of assigned works completed within the approved project schedule.
• Compliance with approved drawings, specifications, and construction standards.
• Percentage reduction in construction defects and rework.
• Timely closure of snags and non-conformities.
• Compliance with HSE requirements and reduction in site incidents.
• Efficient utilisation of labour, materials, equipment, and other resources.
• Timely submission of daily, weekly, and monthly project reports.
• Timely resolution of RFIs and technical issues.
• Subcontractor performance against agreed work programmes.
• Percentage of project activities completed within approved cost parameters.
• Quality and completeness of project documentation.
• Client/consultant satisfaction with assigned project deliverables.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor's Degree or HND in Civil Engineering, Building Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Minimum of 5 years' relevant experience in construction/project execution.
• Proven experience working on building, civil, infrastructure, industrial, or commercial construction projects.
• Professional certification or membership of relevant professional bodies such as COREN/NSE is an added advantage.
• Good knowledge of construction methods, project planning, quality control, and HSE requirements.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and relevant project management/construction software.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, BOQs, and construction documents.
