Safety Officer

Job Overview
- The Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring that all terminal activities are carried out in a safe and healthy working environment.
- The role involves monitoring daily operations, identifying hazards, ensuring compliance with safety policies and regulatory requirements, and promoting a strong safety culture across the terminal.
- The Safety Officer works closely with employees, contractors, and management to prevent accidents, respond to safety concerns, and support continuous improvement in workplace safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Patrol cargo areas to identify unsafe acts or conditions (e.g., improper stacking of Dangerous Goods, faulty crane operations)
- Ensure compliance with international and national maritime safety frameworks
- Verify proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and maintenance of safety/rescue equipment
- Conduct routine safety inductions, toolbox talks, and emergency drills for port workers and stevedores
- Monitor workplace safety practices and report hazards promptly
- Investigate incidents and accidents, ensuring corrective actions are implemented
- Support emergency response procedures and readiness
- Prepare accurate and timely safety reports
- Promote employee safety awareness and engagement
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) in a relevant discipline
- Field of Study: Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Industrial Safety, Environmental Management, Logistics & Supply Chain Management, or related field
- Experience: 0–3 years in safety or HSE-related roles
Knowledge:
- Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) principles
- Hazard identification and risk assessment
- Accident/incident investigation
- Emergency response procedures
- Fire prevention and fire safety
- PPE requirements
- Workplace safety regulations and compliance
- Environmental management practices
- Safety inspection and reporting procedures
- Basic first aid principles
- Strong observation and attention to detail
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
Salary
N150,000 - N200,000 / month.
