Automation PLC and SCADA Engineer

Role Objective

• Design, configure, integrate, and validate the PLC and SCADA solution for tank monitoring, control, alarming, safeguarding, and operational data management.

Core Roles and Responsibilities

• Design, configure, and commission PLC and SCADA systems for the automated monitoring and control of crude oil storage tanks, including integration with tank gauging, leak detection, and overfill prevention systems.
• Develop and test PLC logic (ladder logic/function block/structured text) for tank automation sequences, alarm management, and interlock philosophy.
• Configure SCADA/HMI graphics for real-time tank inventory monitoring, trending, and operator alarm displays, ensuring compliance with high-performance HMI (ISA-101) principles.
• Integrate tank automation systems with the terminal's existing DCS (e.g., Honeywell Experion, Yokogawa Centum, ABB 800xA, or Emerson DeltaV) via appropriate communication protocols (Modbus, HART, Foundation Fieldbus, OPC-UA).
• Conduct Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) of automation systems, including full simulation of tank overfill and leak scenarios.
• Perform cybersecurity hardening of automation networks in line with IEC 62443, given the criticality of crude storage monitoring systems.
• Troubleshoot and resolve PLC/SCADA communication faults, network architecture issues, and control system failures during commissioning and post-handover support.
• Prepare comprehensive as-built control narratives, functional design specifications, and operator training materials for the automated tank systems.

Qualifications and Requirements
Automation failures on crude storage systems can directly cause spills or overfill incidents — qualifications must be airtight.

• B.Eng./M.Eng. in Electrical/Electronic, Control Systems, Computer, or Automation Engineering, minimum Second Class Upper, from an accredited institution — candidates holding only a general Computer Science degree without a control systems specialization will not be considered.
• Minimum ten (10) years of hands-on experience in industrial automation/PLC-SCADA engineering within oil & gas, with a minimum of five (5) years specifically on tank farm or terminal automation projects (general manufacturing PLC experience will not substitute).
• Mandatory, currently valid vendor-specific certification in at least TWO of the following: Siemens (TIA Portal/S7), Rockwell Automation (Studio 5000/RSLogix), Honeywell Experion PKS, Yokogawa Centum VP, or Emerson DeltaV — general familiarity without formal vendor certification is not acceptable.
• Demonstrated, personally-led (not team-assisted) commissioning of a minimum of two (2) tank automation/SCADA integration projects of comparable scale, verifiable via named client references who must be contactable for direct verification.
• Working knowledge of industrial cybersecurity standards (IEC 62443) with practical experience implementing network segmentation, firewalls, and access control on OT networks — a cybersecurity certification (e.g., GICSP) is strongly preferred and will be scored above candidates without one.
• COREN registration (full member) is mandatory, in addition to membership in ISA or IEEE.
• Demonstrated fluency in at least one industrial communication protocol stack (OPC-UA, Modbus TCP/RTU, Foundation Fieldbus) sufficient to independently diagnose communication failures without vendor support — to be tested via a live troubleshooting scenario at interview.
• Valid BOSIET/HUET, offshore medical fitness certificate, and readiness for immediate rotational offshore mobilization.
• Must pass a hands-on PLC programming practical test (live logic-building exercise under time constraint) as part of the selection process — no exceptions.

Mandatory Requirements:

• Qualifications and professional certifications must be issued by recognised bodies, current where applicable, and independently verifiable. Expired, unverifiable, or attendance-only certificates will not satisfy a mandatory requirement.
• Candidates must demonstrate recent experience on comparable oil and gas projects. Generic construction experience without direct tank, terminal, refinery, process-plant or offshore exposure will not be accepted.
• Candidates must be able to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, inspection and test plans, permits, risk assessments and applicable codes, and must produce clear technical reports in English.
• Candidates must demonstrate strong process-safety awareness, stop-work discipline, quality ownership and effective collaboration in a live brownfield environment.
• All offshore survival, medical and safety credentials specified for the role must be valid before mobilisation. Any offer remains conditional upon medical fitness, background checks and client approval.
