Consultant Psychiatrist

Job Purpose

• The Consultant Psychiatrist will provide specialist assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management for patients presenting with acute and complex mental health conditions at the African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE).
• The role will deliver safe, compassionate, evidence-based care across outpatient, inpatient, emergency, and liaison settings; lead multidisciplinary clinical decision-making; and strengthen AMCE's mental health pathways, governance, education, and quality improvement programmes.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Specialist Clinical Practice:

• Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments, including mental state examination, risk assessment, formulation, diagnosis, and treatment planning.
• Manage a broad range of mental health conditions, including mood, anxiety, psychotic, trauma-related, substance-use, neurocognitive, and medically associated disorders.
• Provide consultant-led outpatient, inpatient, emergency, and consultation-liaison psychiatry services.
• Prescribe, review, and monitor psychotropic medication in line with evidence-based guidelines, physical-health risks, and potential drug interactions.
• Coordinate psychological, social, occupational, and rehabilitative interventions as part of individualised care plans.
• Assess and manage psychiatric emergencies, including suicide risk, severe behavioural disturbance, delirium, withdrawal states, and acute psychosis.

Multidisciplinary & Integrated Care:

• Lead multidisciplinary case reviews and work closely with physicians, surgeons, nurses, psychologists, pharmacists, social workers, and other allied health professionals.
• Provide specialist advice to AMCE's oncology, cardiovascular, haematology, general medical and surgical, and critical-care teams.
• Build effective referral, discharge, relapse-prevention, and follow-up pathways with internal and external care providers.
• Engage patients and families in shared decision-making, psychoeducation, and recovery-focused care while maintaining confidentiality and dignity.

Clinical Leadership & Service Development:

• Provide clinical leadership for psychiatry services and supervise junior doctors and other members of the mental health team.
• Develop and implement clinical pathways, protocols, and escalation arrangements for mental health care across the hospital.
• Support workforce planning, service evaluation, resource utilisation, and the responsible growth of psychiatry services at AMCE.
• Promote a culture of compassionate care, professional accountability, safeguarding, and zero tolerance for stigma or discrimination.

Quality, Governance & Compliance:

• Ensure practice complies with applicable Nigerian legislation, professional standards, AMCE policies, and recognised international guidelines.
• Lead clinical audits, incident reviews, morbidity and mortality discussions, and quality improvement initiatives related to mental health care.
• Maintain accurate, timely, confidential clinical records and monitor agreed quality, safety, and outcome indicators.
• Contribute specialist input to safeguarding, capacity, consent, restraint, and other complex ethical or medico-legal decisions.

Teaching, Research & Professional Development:

• Teach, supervise, and mentor residents, medical officers, students, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
• Participate in research, service evaluation, scientific presentations, and publication relevant to psychiatry and integrated care.
• Maintain continuing professional development and support an evidence-based learning culture across the service.

Must have skills:

• Demonstrated competence in managing acute, complex, and medically co-morbid mental health conditions across inpatient and outpatient settings

Qualifications

• Minimum of 7 years' post-fellowship experience in specialist psychiatric practice.
• MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognised institution.
• Fellowship in Psychiatry from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, West African College of Physicians, Royal College of Psychiatrists, or an equivalent recognised specialist qualification.
• Full registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and a valid practising licence, or eligibility to obtain both before appointment.
• Additional training or certification in consultation-liaison, addiction, old-age, forensic, or another relevant psychiatric subspecialty is advantageous.
• Demonstrated competence in managing acute, complex, and medically co-morbid mental health conditions across inpatient and outpatient settings.
• Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and developing clinical pathways or services in a tertiary or specialist healthcare environment.
• Proven contribution to teaching, supervision, clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, or research.
• Excellent clinical judgement, communication, leadership, and conflict-management skills.
• Strong commitment to ethical practice, confidentiality, patient safety, and culturally responsive, person-centred care.
