• Out client, Financial Infrastructure for Nature Agency is seeking a skilled and solutions-driven Backend Engineer to join our team and contribute to the development of reliable, scalable, and secure financial infrastructure.

About the Role

• We are looking for an experienced Backend Engineer (Payments & Microservices) with strong expertise in TypeScript and Node.js to build and maintain payment integrations across Africa.
• In this role, you will initially focus on integrating Payment Service Providers (PSPs) such as Fincra, Paystack, dLocal, and OmniBSIC. As the platform evolves, you will play a critical role in transitioning our existing Node.js/Express monolithic application into a scalable microservices architecture.
• The ideal candidate has hands-on experience building payment systems, designing financial ledgers, managing complex transactions, and developing reliable backend services. You should be comfortable working with financial data where accuracy, security, data integrity, and transaction consistency are essential.

Technology Stack:

• TypeScript, Node.js (Express), PostgreSQL, Drizzle ORM, Google Cloud Platform (GCP Cloud Run)

Key Responsibilities
Payment Service Provider (PSP) Integration:

• Build, integrate, and maintain provider-neutral payment adapters for African payment providers, including Fincra, Paystack, dLocal, and OmniBSIC.
• Implement payment initiation, status tracking, webhook processing, and transaction verification.
• Develop reusable integration patterns that support multiple payment providers and regional payment rails.
• Ensure reliable payment processing, error handling, retries, and transaction status management.

Microservices Architecture and Migration:

• Refactor the existing TypeScript/Express monolith into a modular, bounded microservices architecture.
• Contribute to the design and development of three core services:
  • Core API Service
  • Payments & Sub-Ledger Service
  • Data Platform Service
• Establish clear service boundaries, communication patterns, and data ownership.
• Ensure scalability, maintainability, fault tolerance, and reliability throughout the migration process.

Financial Ledger and Transaction Engineering:

• Develop and maintain an event-sourced, double-entry accounting sub-ledger.
• Implement payment routing, multi-way split allocations, and transaction lifecycle management.
• Design robust idempotency mechanisms to prevent duplicate financial transactions.
• Build automated bank statement reconciliation processes and ensure accurate financial records.
• Maintain strict financial invariants, including balanced debit and credit entries for every transaction.

Database Design and Optimization:

• Design, implement, and optimize relational database schemas using PostgreSQL and Drizzle ORM.
• Enforce data integrity, transactional consistency, and appropriate database constraints.
• Optimize queries, indexes, and transaction processing for performance and reliability.
• Implement appropriate database migration and versioning practices.

API Development, Webhooks, and Multi-Tenancy:

• Build secure, scalable REST APIs for financial and platform operations.
• Design and maintain multi-tenant identity and workspace hierarchies.
• Develop reliable webhook ingestion systems and payment status polling mechanisms.
• Implement secure authentication, authorization, validation, and error-handling practices.
• Ensure reliable communication with external payment providers across different African markets.

Cloud Deployment and Operational Reliability:

• Deploy and maintain backend services on Google Cloud Platform, particularly Cloud Run.
• Support monitoring, logging, debugging, and production incident resolution.
• Apply best practices for service reliability, security, and deployment automation.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Interested candidates should possess a Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 3 years of professional backend engineering experience.
• Strong proficiency in TypeScript and Node.js, particularly Express.js.
• Demonstrable experience integrating payment gateways or Payment Service Providers (PSPs), preferably across African markets.
• Familiarity with providers such as Fincra, Paystack, dLocal, OmniBSIC, or similar payment platforms.
• Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL, relational database design, and modern ORMs such as Drizzle ORM.
• Proven experience designing or implementing double-entry accounting ledgers, financial ledgers, or complex transactional systems.
• Understanding of event sourcing, idempotency, transaction consistency, and financial reconciliation.
• Experience refactoring monolithic applications into microservices or modular service-oriented architectures.
• Strong understanding of REST API development, webhooks, asynchronous processing, and error handling.
• Ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and build reliable, maintainable backend systems.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively within a remote team.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience deploying and managing backend services on GCP Cloud Run.
• Experience working with African payment infrastructure and regional payment rails.
• Familiarity with distributed systems, message queues, event-driven architectures, and service-to-service communication.
• Knowledge of financial reconciliation workflows, payment settlement processes, and sub-ledger accounting.
• Experience implementing automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, observability, and production monitoring.
• Familiarity with multi-currency payments, payment routing, and split-payment systems.

Salary
N550,000 - N650,000 / Month.
