Job Summary
- We are seeking a proactive and experienced Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Officer to join our project team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for implementing and maintaining Health, Safety and Environmental policies and procedures to ensure compliance with company standards and statutory regulations.
- The successful candidate must have proven experience working on construction project sites and possess a strong commitment to promoting a safe and healthy work environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement and enforce the company's Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) policies and procedures on the project site.
- Conduct daily site safety inspections and identify potential hazards, recommending corrective and preventive actions.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable HSE regulations, client requirements, and industry standards.
- Facilitate site safety inductions for all employees, subcontractors, and visitors.
- Conduct regular toolbox talks, safety briefings, and HSE awareness training.
- Monitor work activities to ensure compliance with safe work practices and the use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions, preparing comprehensive reports and recommendations.
- Develop and implement emergency response procedures and coordinate emergency drills.
- Maintain HSE documentation, including inspection reports, incident reports, permits, risk assessments, and training records.
- Conduct Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and Risk Assessments before high-risk activities commence.
- Monitor environmental compliance, including waste management, pollution prevention, and housekeeping standards.
- Liaise with regulatory authorities, clients, consultants, and management on HSE-related matters.
- Monitor subcontractor HSE performance and ensure compliance with project safety requirements.
- Prepare weekly and monthly HSE performance reports for management.
- Promote a strong safety culture across the project through continuous engagement and coaching.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree or HND in Engineering, Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related discipline.
- 3–5 years' HSE experience on construction project sites.
- Professional HSE certifications such as NEBOSH, ISPON, OSHA, IOSH, or equivalent are required.
- Sound knowledge of Nigerian HSE regulations and construction safety standards.
- Experience conducting incident investigations, risk assessments, and safety audits.
- Strong knowledge of permit-to-work systems and safe work procedures.
- Excellent report writing, communication, and presentation skills.
- Strong leadership, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work under pressure and in remote project site locations.
